Kickstart
So, like 2 years ago there was this list exercise that was floating around facebook. You were supposed to list 25 things that people may/may not know about yourself. In an effort to get back on the blog horse I’m republishing it here. Lame? Possibly, but definitely easier than summing up my life for the past 6 months. September and October alone have had enough ups and downs to kill an ordinary man. By the way, the “love” I referenced in my previous post, well, we are now engaged :)
- When I was in third grade my school district held an art competition as part of a public service announcement encouraging kids to eat healthier lunches. I won. They announced it during lunchtime in front of the whole cafeteria, and my drawing was on a billboard for a month. It was my Publishers Clearinghouse moment.
- In fourth grade I got sent home from school for flipping off the principal.
- My brother and sister are so great that they make me wish I had more siblings.
- I was campaigning for president of my high school’s chapter of National Honor Society when I got suspended from school for being drunk at homecoming.
- I think it has been unanimously decided that I am the crazy one in my immediate family, although I don’t feel like I’m particularly wild.
- I have been exposed to tuberculosis and had to take medicine for 9 months to ensure that it would remain dormant in my system forever. 50 years ago, I’da been toast.
- I lived in Sevilla, Spain, for nine months and during that time I visited Morocco, Portugal, France, the UK, Germany, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, The Netherlands, and more…and out of all of that I still cannot get over how bright the stars are in the middle of the Sahara Desert.
- Sometimes I think I’m OCD because I start picking my split ends every time they get in my line of vision… and also because I find it unnerving when people leave the extra time on the microwave clock. Just press clear!
- Driving on I-80 West gets me really really excited because I know what’s coming…
- Making organic soap in Boulder for $13/hr is overwhelmingly appealing to me.
- I was jobless and therefore broke for 3 months after graduating from college… in order to give myself something to do that didn’t involve spending money I taught myself how to knit via YouTube. I now knit every night before I go to bed.
- At some point in college I decided that all I really wanted was at least 6 kids and a lot of land for them to explore…be it a farm, ranch, vineyard, orchard –I don’t even care what state it’s in. Although I still haven’t really given up on that one, I am currently in an apartment in Chicago at an 8 to 5 job
- I don’t know which toothbrush is mine, although I have always thought it was the thicker blue one.
- I have never broken a bone but I have sprained both of my ankles at the same time.
- I can play “Will the Circle be Unbroken,” “This Land is Your Land” and “Bad Moon Rising” on the banjo. I’m taking lessons, they’re fun.
- At one point in my life I could mount a bareback horse trotting past me. (I had to stand on a stump, but it counts!)
- I prefer vinyl to digital in almost every case.
- I have always had a very solid, strong, underlying feeling that I have a purpose and that there is a point to life. And I feel sorry for people that don’t feel that way.
- I collect succulents… variegated jades, hobbit jades, cacti, aloe, yucca, crassula… I cant get enough of the fat plant!
- I admire red-headed people and really hope I am lucky enough to have at least one red headed child.
- I could never turn down a gummy bear.
- I thoroughly enjoy the exhilaration of being somewhere you are not supposed to be.
- I’m going to plant a garden this spring, and I’m going to plan it this weekend.
- I have an incredibly high tolerance for very spicy things. I eat Sriracha (the red rooster sauce) on saltines as a snack. My sister says I have a pepper belly.
- I got Phish tickets to Deer Creek and both shows at Alpine Valley, and I am SO excited. On that same note, I am depressed by the prices of Bonnaroo tickets and though I love indie music just as much and am thrilled that hipsters and hippies can at last come together… I think that they should take that shit somewhere else. The wooks had that locked down first! And aside from all of that, Bruce Springsteen!?! Come on! They should know better. Do you want your mom at Bonnaroo?
Numbers 11, 13, and 15 are no longer true, and 24 and 25 don’t really apply. Other than that, I haven’t changed much.

This is what I had for dinner last night. The seared tuna came with stir fried julienne carrots, and red peppers, asparagus, mushrooms, snowpeas and a wasabi sauce. The scallops were served with black rice, lychee, pak choi (i think it was called), butter baby carrots, and a truffle vin. Word on the street is that the scallops will be making a cameo on the menu at sola.

I have been grooving to this song all day. It feels good.

Vampire Weekend, “Giving Up the Gun”
I could take all these bitches in tennis. Probly wouldn’t fuck with RZA though.

People don’t come with instructions
…but if you pay attention, listen to them and consider their actions its only a matter of time before they will show, tell or otherwise reveal what they want and need. Ultimately, life will reveal to both people in a relationship whether they compliment each other’s happiness or complicate the pursuit.
I think bad relationships happen when people refuse to see, hear or accept the fact that they aren’t quite the right fit for each other. Nothing is sadder than grown ass men and women frowning around and tugging on their ill-fitting relationships.
